Dr. Johann Georg Faust
Dr. Johann Georg Faust was born in the late 15th Century. He received a degree in divinity from the University of Heidelberg before travelling through Europe, starting with Krakow, where he supposedly studied magic. Tales of his magical feats spread through the country, and, during an encounter with a Franciscan monk named Dr. Klinge, he supposedly admitted to making a pact with the Devil. After this, the stories of his deeds spread further, making him a legend in his own time. In 1587 AD, almost fifty years after his death, the first Faustbuch was published. It was a chapbook, a sort of pamphlet, and it claimed to tell the truth of Dr. Faust's life. Less than twenty years later, Marlowe wrote The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus. Though his life seems to have inspired The Tragical History, it is likely that many of the acts attributed to Dr. Faust were not his own.
